In practice
A trade licence authorises a given activity, at a given address, for a given period, and is then renewed. Its wording matters: business carried on outside its scope is not covered, and banks often compare the account's flows with that wording. Some activities also need the approval of a sector authority, before or after the licence depending on the country. Changing activity, adding one or moving usually means amending the licence, not just notifying it. In the United Arab Emirates, a licence is classed as commercial, professional, industrial or tourism, with its activity code drawn from an official list held by the department of economic development; in a free zone, the zone authority issues it.
